About Dessicants

Polymeric materials and their corresponding additives and fillers have excessive moisture levels that can adversely affect both their melt processing and physical characteristics of the resulting finished composite. This problem becomes acute in case of reprocessing / recycling of polymers which inherently contains surface moisture either from the nature or from washing to remove dirt particles etc. Entrapped moisture creates a number of problems viz:

  • Irregular foaming
  • Surface defects like pinholes
  • Melt fracture / surface roughness / edge tear / sharkskin

To avoid the above various methods have been designed to take out moisture from system like vacuum processing, preheating and drying etc. but all these costs extra processing equipment and energy which adds to cost of processing. Use of ‘0m’ is the cheapest and most effective way of scavenging moisture during processing of polymer. In polyurethane isocyanides immediately reacts with H2O. ‘0m’ tends to react with the moisture even at room temperature thus drawing out H2O molenle from the system which in times gives support to ‘Reaction’.

Dessicant Masterbatch


‘Zero Moisture’ dessicant masterbatches are combination of high grade dessicant coated with virgin polymer and other additive to give desired performance:

  • Due to better MFI it mixes and disperses readily with the moisture.
  • Due to low melting temperature it reacts with the moisture immediately.
  • Do not interfere with the main composite formulation.
  • Enhances the properties of the end product.
  • Finished product has better surface finish and is free from pinholes, porosity and fish eyes etc.

PVC


Processing temperatures go as high as 180°C – 200°C and processing aids and fillers having inert moisture which evaporates and reacts with chlorine to form HCL. Use of ‘Zero Moisture’ helps into

  • Improves surface finish by avoiding pinholes, porosity, fish eye and other defects.
  • Reacts with HCL formulated due to water presence.
  • Avoids HCL corrosive reaction on extrusion equipment and increases life of stationery and moving parts. Hence less repair and maintenance cost.
  • Recommended its use in PVC profiles, PVC coatings, PVC adhesive, Cables etc.

Poly-olefins and other Plastics


This covers a wide variety of materials viz. LDP, LLDP, HDP, PP, XLPE, Poly-urethanes etc. These polymers are more or less hygroscopic and contains moisture. Further addition of fillers, processing aids and colors adds moisture content and needs pre-heating in mixing or drying in ovens. Even after this some content of moisture remains which affects the quality of finished product. Use of ‘Zero Moisture’ takes care of it and helps in eliminating –

  • Pinholes and porosity and improvise better surface finish.
  • Avoids deformities in extruded products.
  • No fish eyes.
  • Enhances overall properties of the final product.
  • Improvement in Colors and overall surface finish.

Rubber


Rubber Moisture is particularly a problem with room/low pressure, vulcanization. On account of high temperatures during process moisture starts to evaporate and blisters can form. The above happens as moisture being present in all rubber chemicals and fillers. ‘Zero Moisture’ dessicant reacts with moisture and forms a non-reactive compound. This reaction can also happen while storing uncured rubber compounds.
It is highly recommended to be used in

  • Pressure less continuous curing systems like LCM, fluid beds in hot air.
  • Low pressure curing in cable industry.
  • In compounds cured in heat transfer fluids.
  • Others as well.
